Our homes are built to shelter us from the elements and provide a comfortable living space for us. Most homes fulfill these basic requirements, but at what cost? How much energy is wasted through air infiltration? Is there mold and rot behind the flashy tile shower? Are families getting sick because of the air quality in their homes?
After remodeling homes and doing much research, I have become frustrated with the residential homes being built today. This year, I plan to design and build a house that will outlast and outperform nearly any other home on the market.
What’s My Motivation?
My wife and I were blessed with our first son in July. Sitting in the hospital room thinking of bringing our tiny addition home scared the crap out of me. I started thinking about baby proofing the house, and Rocko couldn’t even roll over yet. What really scared me was what I couldn’t fix with a trip to the hardware store.
We live in a house built in the 60’s and I do not want to know what is in the ductwork under the 60 year old slab mixing with the air getting inhaled by our precious bundle of joy. I also thought about this amazing world we brought him into and what I need to do to ensure it is abundant for the next generation. How can I minimize my carbon footprint, and live in a way for a more sustainable future?
What Are My Home Goals?
My goal is simple – to design and build a home with purpose. While it will be quite a challenge to create as much energy as I use, I strive for a net zero home that is as healthy as it is beautiful. I am also focused on function. I want every aspect of the home to serve a specific purpose. (No decorative shutters needed.)
What Is Different About My New Home?
My home will be designed as one system. The building enclosure will have a continuous water, air, vapor, and thermal layer. I plan on utilizing Insulated Concrete Forms, Advanced Framing, Photovoltaic Panels, Heat Pump Water Heaters, Mini Split Systems, Radiant Floor Heating, Tilt Turn Windows, a Heat Recovery Ventilator, Barrier Free Showers, and many other interesting concepts not found in the typical American Home.

What To Expect From My Blog
Throughout the design and build process, I’ll provide pictures, videos and details of what I’m putting into the home, and the science behind my building decisions. If you’re interested in learning more about healthy, efficient homes, I hope you’ll follow along with my journey.
Time to go pack for the International Builders Show in Vegas! Talk to you all again soon.
Excited to follow along! Love the science and ideas behind this!
